Rough rough night......

For hippa reasons, can't go into details.  Just know that last night was a rough emotional night for me.

So, today I'm posting 2 prior blogs from my very first blog related to nursing.... just because, well, it's my blog and I can... lol.

"Someone posted this on facebook... nobody knows the author..but I found it interesting and thought some of you might as well.....

Patients aren't always satisfied with how well nurses communicate, a recent Medicare survey revealed. Well, nurses had no trouble communicating with me after I defended them (last) Sunday. Nurses from recovery rooms, coronary care, pediatrics, geriatrics, ER and Trauma units e-mailed me across the country. Here's what they had to say:Come walk in our shoes for a 12-hour shift. Come see the joy, the tragedy, the comedy, the 100 ways we are pulled and pushed, then rate my "pleasant greeting", "answers call light in timely fashion", "states name of patient."

Use the bathroom now, because you might not get the chance again until your shift ends. Wear comfortable shoes. Don't worry if they're clean. They'll end up with blood and vomit on them. We are the patient's advocate, the doctors' eyes and ears, and everyone's scapegoat. We can page your doctor but we can't make that doctor magically appear. We check your stitches, wipe your blood, drain your pus and empty your bedpan. Nursing is a tough job, but we're tougher. We've been yelled at by administrators, supervisors and doctors. We've been kicked, slapped, punched, spat on, and sexually harassed by patients in various states of delirium, mental illness, arrogance, and intoxication. We've even had chairs and food trays thrown at us. We work mandatory overtime, weekends and holidays. We eat Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with coworkers.

We deal with families who ignore visiting hours, bring food to patients on restricted diets, and insist on staying the night even though it's not a private room. We deal with the Florida son who orders us around to show a parent he's neglected for years that he cares. We cannot be at your side every waking minute. We have 10 other patients. We cannot answer 5 call lights at once. We can't stop doing CPR on a patient because you ran out of tissues. We are not maids, beauticians, or cocktail waitresses. We are professionals with college degrees. We hate that we can't spend more bedside time with you. Swearing at us will not make us move faster. Taking better care of your health would help. Quit smoking. Lose weight. Start exercising. Stop drinking. How do we survive? We ignore the nasty comments, the demanding relatives, the crazy staffing grids. We count to 10 before speaking. We pray every morning for strength and wisdom, patience and empathy.

We drive home tired and frustrated, telling ourselves over and over , "I'm not the nurse I want to be, but I'm the best nurse the hospital staffing allows me to be." We fall asleep praying for the ones who won't survive the night. There is no finish line, ever. Nursing is demanding, fulfilling, and we can't imagine doing anything else. Nothing beats washing blood and glass off a car crash survivor , stabilizing a broken neck, saving a diabetic's leg, keeping a cancer patient in remission. The day we send a patient home we relish the unbelievable resilience of the human body and spirit. We did not become nurses for the hours, the salary, or the glamour of it all. We became nurses to make a difference. We don't ask for much. One sincere Thank You makes all the thankless hours worth it."

"Well folks.. I officially have one more night of nursing school left. Wow. I can't believe that this has gone by so quickly, yet so slowly, at the same time. I have a few random thoughts to blog on, so follow me as this, as most of my posts...may be totally random and turn some sharp corners at times..... Shocker, I know.
If anything, nursing school has attempted to kill me. Last year I had Flu A and Flu B four weeks.... count them.. FOUR weeks apart. In my second semester I developed migraines and even developed a hemi-plegic migraine where the right side of my body was numb. I have had a lot of health problems my entire life, but have never been so terrified, especially when the word "stroke" came up. There have been stomach bugs that I was sure were gonna cause me to throw up vital organs and not be able to put them back. Colds galore.. an ear infection which made me have a whole new level of appreciation for my kiddo's who basically keep an ear infection. So painful, so uncomfortable. Oh, and Flu A again this year (yeah.. last week.. haven't blogged that yet..consider that done now..lol). In addition, I have had a few hangovers that made me wish for death. Yes, you could say that last one was my fault..but I'm sure the drinking was because of stress related to nursing school, so I'm just gonna blame it on nursing school. lol.
I have learned that I have the patience I never knew, but yet lack sooo much patience. I have found strength in myself to accomplish something that I never really believed I could do, despite my desire to do it (age, money, time, etc).
I have seen life begin. I have seen life end. I have learned not to cry when something bad happens, but have yet to learn how to not let those feelings regarding what I wanted to cry about out when I'm in the confines of my own home. This makes me feel sometimes heartless, but yet sometimes a softie.
I have found that the right instructor can really really REALLY make a difference in the lives of her students and will forever be grateful for being able to consider her my instructor, mentor, and friend. I have learned to bite my tongue. Those of you who truly know me, know this is not an easy one. I have learned that I have sooo much more to learn and this is hardly even the beginning.
I have begun to fear growing old and dying more than I ever have my entire life. I fear dying alone. All alone in a hospital room. No visitors. No family. No flowers. Just nurses who hopefully care enough to turn me every 2 hours, keep my pain low, and maybe take away a good memory of me.
I fear that I will never be comfortable as a nurse and will always question if I'm doing the right thing. Maybe I shouldn't fear that. Maybe I should hope I am never too comfortable that I make a bad decision because I didn't question myself. Man. Talk about a ying-yang.
I am not sure I will ever stop trying to achieve the "next level". Right now the thought of taking one more class makes me consider suicide or homicide. (Not REALLY.. but seemed like a good place to put that one). But at the same time, stopping the learning process sounds really scary. Damn that ying-yang again.
I don't think I will ever stop thinking about things at night. I think this is why I will be on Ambien forever. If I don't sleep at night, I ponder things.. how is little jane doe doing?? I wonder if Mr. John Doe made it or passed away. Did I finish everything? Basically, did I do everything I need to do for everyone that I needed or could have done?
I guess as the evening is wrapping up, so should this post. I hope everyone is doing well in whatever part of the world you may be reading this from. Until next time...."

"About Me"

On the right to this blog..... there is an "about me" section.  And while I summed it up, I felt like doing an "about me" blog today.

My name is April.  I am 30, and FASTLY approaching 31.  YIKES!  I try to embrace the age.  They say you are only as old as you feel, but some days I feel 50... so, um, I don't like that saying.  How about you are only as old as you ACT?  :)  My birthday card from my boyfriend last year said "growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional". (Followed by a cute comment of growing old together ;) )   I like the optional thing though!

I am a registered nurse and am currently doing the travel nurse gig.  It's been a huge change for me, but I have loved it so far.  I've been a nurse for a little over 2 years and have been in the health care field since I graduated college the FIRST time in 1999.  I became a nurse because I love taking care of people, and I went to nursing school with the intention of being a Pediatric Nurse.  Somehow... I ended up in Cardiac????  WTH?  lol.  Regrets?? Not a single one.  Along the way, I did have regrets, and anger towards the various factors that caused me not to land my "dream" job in peds... be it budget, timing, or what have you.

So, personally..who am I?  Well, part of me likes to think that all of the "quirks" about me are because I'm a nurse.  But perhaps they are the REASON I became a nurse?

For example.  I've been called a pessimist before by a certain person..... I call it a realist..... When I walk into a patient room at the beginning of a shift, the first thing I look at is "is the path to the bed clear in case they code?"  "where is the ambu bag in this room?"  "is the suction set up, or do I need to do that?"  "where is the oxygen"  Prepare for the worst, hope for the best is basically what every nurse LIVES by.  I guess part of that carries over into your personal life?  I think I've always been a little bit like this, but DEFIANTLY more after becoming a nurse.

Germs.. don't get me started.  I don't think I'm the cleanest clean freak in the world, but after seeing patients deathly ill after avoidable illnesses, you become a little more aware of things that perhaps the rest of the world doesn't see...because you see what the rest of the world doesn't see.  Funny how that works out eh?

So, back to "about me".  I'm a pessimist germ freak, and well, that's just me...lol.

Carrying on.  :)

If you read much on my blog, you will quickly see that I'm a quote and lyric gal.  Have been as long as I can remember.  I remember making mixed tapes (yes, TAPES) in middle school because of the lyrics of songs.  Perhaps it's I don't have the attention span to read novels, so lyrics and quotes take much less commitment??  ADHD perhaps?? haha.  I just find lyrics and quotes at certain times of my life, well, therapeutic.  And as I age, and go through bigger life experiences, I find that I turn to them even more than before.  Either this will continue and I'll be that Granny that the grandkids don't wanna visit, because instead of stories, she'll tell quotes... or... in the next year or so, I will run out of quotes to read and find another new obsession??  Eh.. I'm going with the first scenario?  lol.

My family story is complicated.  So complicated that even *I* don't understand it.  What I do understand is my immediate family.  My "dad" is my step dad (so, he's kinda like a hostage...lol) who has been my dad, well, as long as I can remember and has been the best dad a girl could EVER have hoped for.  Never once did he ever treat me like a stepchild.  And I don't remember ever feeling like he wasn't my actual dad.  I truly cherish him.  My mom and I have a close relationship.  We were really close when I was a kid, then when I was ages 17-23/24...nothing.  No relationship.  Here and there something, but that was it.  Luckily, everything lined back up and we are close.  Next is my niece, Erin.  I *love* that kid, almost as if she were my own.  She said her version of "April" well before she said "mama".  We've always been close.  Recently I posted some pictures on FB of her and I when she was young.  Wow.  It soooo feels like yesterday.  And there are times I still see that "little" girl in her, and I have to remind myself that she is no longer that little girl, but is an adult now, and 18 yrs old.  (WHAT??!?!!!??!!!)  I can see why parents always view their kids as children, no matter how old they get.  I TOTALLY get it now.  Totally.  In the past year or so, we've transitioned almost into a "sister" relationship.  And I'm quite happy with that. :)   Past that as far as family goes, it gets complicated... like I said, more complicated than I care to understand so I won't subject you readers to it!

I'm in a relationship for over 10 months now with someone who was before one of my best friends for several years prior.  Funny how life works out, eh?  Did I mention it's a long distance relationship?   Yeah.  Oh, and did I mention the distance is 11 THOUSAND miles?  No.  Well, I have now.  lol.  And if you've read my blog this isn't news..lol.  All began August 4th last year.  Took us both by surprise, to be honest.  And we've had our fair share of problems.  Perhaps more than normal, however I strongly feel that has a LOT to do with the miles and the hardships that being so far apart for such long periods brings about.  When I hear others gripe they only saw their significant other 3 times in the past week, part of me wants to laugh, part of me wants to punch them.  But, instead, I listen as a friend.  Because that's something I pride myself in, but we'll get to that.  Back to the relationship.  We've been through our really high high's...and our really low low's.  However, I feel confident that the worst is behind us and while no relationship is perfect or easy, we are really where we need to be and the future looks good.  I so look forward to the future...traveling, day to day life at home, raising a family.. I just can't wait.

Let's see... so you now know my job, family, relationship status.  Next.  Friendship.  I guess I will say now the best quote (see.. I love quotes!) related to this.... "friends are family that you chose".  I guess since my family wasn't very extended (though LARGE) or close,  friends have always been important to me.  And I have the most AMAZING group of friends.  I cannot put into words how much they mean to me.  I could write a BLOG about my friends.  Some are real close, some aren't as close.. but they are all still awesome in their own way.  A few of my friends I would consider family, for sure.  And like I've blogged about before, some of them are the type of friends that are...get this... HONEST.  "that color isn't a good color on you".  While this may be an  "ouch"... THIS is the type of friends I want.. and the kind I am BLESSED enough to have.  And they know, they can expect the same in return.  They are the type of friends I can sometimes go weeks without speaking to, but can pick up like not a day passed.  We are all busy and understand that.  I am just so so so so so so blessed with the friends I have made along this journey called life.  I certainly hope that one day, when I'm long gone, of all things that I'm remembered for, I hope "being a good friend" is one of them.

Dogs.  I love dogs.  I still view a lot of them as "puppies"....despite size and breed.  I'm a previous dog owner, and know how loyal, loving, and faithful dogs are.  This is why I've never understood why bitter women refer to loser men as "dogs".  They were obviously never dog owners.  No matter how bad of a day you have had, or if you scolded your dog right before you left...when you get home.. this little creature is SOOO excited to see you.... wagging it's tail.  Has totally forgiven you for leaving the alone while you were at work and telling them they were a "bad dog" right before you left (because they chased yet ANOTHER cat).  None of that matters.  You can not FEED a dog for a week (not that my dogs EVER were unfed...although their guts could have benefited?? lol) and they will still be just soooo excited to see you.  There is nothing like it.  No PERSON has the love for you that a dog has.  Period.  I have learned that dogs take a LOT of time, work, and patience... and money.  And while I LOVE dogs, I plan on never owning another one.  Plus, I don't think they could EVER compare to my girls, Bonnie and Bailey.  But, between my allergies and the price involved with vets, grooming, boarding, it's just not something I think I ever want to get back into.  At least with kids they eventually become potty trained??!!  lol

This is quickly turning into a novel... which I'm quite known for..right honey? lol.  Other things about me...
Paranoid about my body, no matter how skinny I've ever been.  I would do ANYTHING for a friend.  And please, don't cross my friends, because, well, you are crossing me.  And visa versa.  They've probably threatened Wayne with his life more times than he can count.  True story.  I can quickly get angry, but am usually the first to calm down and feel bad for being angry.  I feel sorry for people far too often.  I hate when I see someone getting bullied or picked on, esp over things they can't control.  I HATE UFC or any violence on TV (as a nurse, I can SEE the MRI and/or CT scans... ugly...).

I am a planner, and can't imagine life without my pocket calander.  I would probably not be ANYWHERE I was suppose to be (including work) without it.  True story.  I hate gardening, and have no desire to do any of this as an "adult".  I love chick flicks, and could watch the same movies over and over and over again.. in fact, I do.  ;)  I love all music, but deep down, I'm a country girl.  I say I hate reality TV, but I think I make myself AVOID it because I could sooo be a couch reality tv potato!

I love hard, laugh harder.  I work hard, and play harder.

I think this is enough for now.. I'm sure everyone stopped reading ages ago... lol

In closing a quote... "If they don't love you at your worst, they don't deserve you at your best.. "

Weekend Back in Kentucky....

So, had these great and awesome agenda during this visit at the folks....

Sleep, shower, pool, shower, dinner, sleep, shower, pool...... you kinda get the picture?  Ok, so mother nature's cooperation??  Non existent.  Rain, thunderstorms, sirens, repeat.  Not. A. Fan.  And of course tomorrow is my last full day here.  And the forecast? Scattered rain and storms.  Well awesome.  Oh well, have had a great time catching up with my niece, mom, and dad.  I don't think I've laughed as much in the last few weeks as I have the last few days with my niece.  It's sooo hard to believe she is an ADULT, and about to start college!??!!  Mom and I came across some baby and young pictures of her tonight.. I said "ahh...look how much cuter she was when she couldn't talk"  hahaha.  But those pictures of her seriously seem like they were just yesterday!

Speaking of dad's... happy fathers day to my dad, John!!!  I posted my status as the following on FB, and figured that I'd copy and paste it.. yeah, I'm lazy tonight.. lol...

"Notice how Maury says you are or are not the father? Why? Simple. Father is DNA. Dad is **soo** much more. So blessed to have the dad I do who has been here and supported and loved me regardless. I love you so much! Happy fathers day to all you DADS out there despite DNA. :)"

My dad and niece headed to Florida this morning to move the first load of stuff into my parents new house.  The house here in Kentucky hasn't sold yet, but considering the price, location, land, and shape, it certainly won't take long.  It's so hard to believe the house I grew up in will soon be someone else's.  Sadface.  But, cant' expect them to stay here just for my own selfish reasons.  Well, I can still pout a little though, right? lol

I also got out my old desktop tonight and am currently transferring pictures onto my external hard drive.  1994 pictures total.  Wow.  It's pictures from like 1999/2000 until about 2009?  Wow.  I can't wait to see some of these pictures....lol.  I'll certainly post a few I'm sure.  I already saw one from 2005 from when I got a massage and then soaked by the rain.. CRAZY hair.  Made me LOL a little.

Well, I guess I'm gonna head to my nice comfy bed.  Two more nights in my awesome bed.  Sigh....  oh well, gotta make the dough!

Hope everyone is doing awesome.  Until next time...

A message to you... yes.. YOU

I am so happy we have decided to spend this life together.  I want you to listen to this song, and read the lyrics.  I was searching for the lyrics and found this video...left me in tears, and only one person in the ENTIRE world will know why...and that's you.  I love you baby.

Life... is.... good.

So, in the last week or so, I've had a work experience (can't go into because of hipaa) that has confirmed I was born to be a Nurse.  I love being a nurse, and this experience is causing me to look to the future as far as the nurse I want to be.  Again, this isn't the place due to hippa to go into much, but as the quote says "my cup runneth over".  And my cup does.

My personal life is falling into place, and life with my love is falling perfectly into place.  In the past 10 months, we have been through so much... but as we have decided..ya know.. what relationship HASN'T had it's fair share of problems.  We've faced, head on mind you, all the normal relationship troubles, PLUS the added 11K miles in distance.  Yes.  11 THOUSAND miles.  And there have been so many days that either of us could have said "F" it, and realized the easiest option would be to simply walk away.  Hell, we wouldn't run into each other.  Wouldn't encounter each other.  And while we had mutual friends through Seven Mary Three, we don't share best friends or super close friends.  But at the end of the day, the easy way seemed like the hard way in comparison to fighting for what we wanted.  Which is each other.  A life, a future, and family together.  Oh lord help me, spawn of the Aussie???  I think I'm making my own prison here, eh?? (what?? oh..people can actually read this?? shit.)  I mean.... Hi..... :)

haha.. just kidding.

Ok.  So....one of my favorite chick flicks is "The Wedding Date".  There are three quotes from that movie I'd like to share... (me... post quotes?!?! nooooo.....lol  ;) )  which to me are appropriate for this time of my life.  And believe it or not, no song/lyrics.... only a clear picture of the future ahead.. one filled with laughter, love, (probably a little frustration) family and friendship.  Hey, the best relationships start as friends afterall, right? :)

"I'd rather fight with you than make love with anyone else"

" The hardest thing is loving someone and then having the courage to let them love you back."

You know what? I agree with him
But I refuse to believe

Wow....

It's amazing how your life can change in 24 hrs, just when you think you've accepted "reality"..you find out it's not reality at all.  It's funny how one conversation can make you so excited, and terrified all at the same time.

Watch this.... if you want.  Youtube on blogger will NOT pull up the video on blogger, no matter what I do.. stupid technology.  Friends is one of my favorite shows, and this is one of my favorite episodes, and it's been on my mind tonight for some reason.

Wait! Last time I knocked technology, I lost Internet.  Dear Internet Gods, I'm sorry, and I love you.....

Ok, so that is the cutest video ever, yes?  lol.  Fitting for my Internet god love/hate relationship... and other things.

Closing on a song... shocker???  I think this has turned into a lyric blog???? lol

Sitting and waiting in the airport with my bags and my thoughts.

Well, I board the plane to head back to Maryland here in about 40 minutes.  I've had a really nice visit with family and a few of my closest friends this weekend.  I barely remember the first two days because of the pain meds and muscle relaxers.  Such a blur.  I don't see how people take those and function!! Good lord, going from the couch to the bed took a little bit of patience and planning.  And I typically dozed off in the middle of the planning.  I was worried when I went off of them whether or not I would be able to sleep normally again (a battle I've been fighting since going off Ambien) and I am happy to report that I have had no problems getting back to sleep.

I really feel like I'm at this sort of crossroad at the moment.  Do I follow my heart, or my mind?  The one good thing about being home was the ability to talk to some of my family and friends who always give me good advice..... and are straight forward and honest, even when it hurts.  The type of friends who tell you "that isn't a good color on you", or the type that let you know when you have something hanging out of your nose.  (lol).   You know, the true friends.  That love you regardless but have no problem telling you how it is... no problem saying "quit being a bitch" and things of that nature.  The type of friends I wouldn't trade for a thing in this world.  And if they are reading this, they know I'm talking about them.  And if I don't tell you enough, I love you for being my friend.

So, the crossroad.  Last night, in my last night in my nice comfy supportive bed (which I will miss dearly!) I thought I'd search online for advice.  I know what my head says.  I know what my heart says.  I know what my family says.  And I know what my dear friends say.  What would an outsider say?  I came across a website called "Baggage Claim" and read this article.  And to quote the article...

"Here’s the thing: Waiting around for someone to make up their mind about you, to dignify you with contact, a relationship, decency, a change of self or whatever, devalues you. If you’ve been living your life in limbo waiting around, you’re breaking a fundamental personal boundary that will erode at your self-esteem"

Wow..  even used the word Limbo.  You know how I have posted about signs?? This spoke to me.  And it made me wonder.  If I know that I love someone and want to be with them, if they can't tell me the same in return, am I wasting my time lost in hope?  Am I foolish?

Then I read the following words...

"You’re better than waiting to be chosen – in healthy relationships, you mutually choose each other and get on with it."

Although this is great advice, it hasn't caused me overnight to make a decision, but it has pushed me towards the point to where I feel if a decision isn't made I have no choice but to make my own.  As much as it hurts me to think of the future without him, I can't ignore all the words of wisdom I've been told and read.  Do I really want to be with someone who doesn't *know* if they want to be with me?

Insert cool, witty title here...

On Monday night at work, I managed to hurt my back/hip.  Long story, but by Tues night I was in so much pain.  I couldn't get comfortable.  All I could do is lay there and cry.  No position made it OK, and living on the 3rd floor of an apartment building was pure misery.  And I was all alone, with nobody nearby to help me.  That evening I ended up forcing myself down the 3 miserable flights of stairs, into my car and drove myself to the hospital.  End result?   Pinched nerve with a possible slipped disc.  Didn't do any xrays because an xray will only show the bones and after examining me the doctor felt it wasn't bone related, just nerve/disc.  So if I continue to have problems then next week I am to go back to a doctor and possibly have an MRI.  After that?  Who knows.  It is starting to feel a LITTLE better thanks to some medication.  I was suppose to Fly to Kentucky on Friday (tomorrow) but when I was out of work and down in my back, I called Delta and for a little bit of money they were able to put me on a flight yesterday morning.  So, I'm home in my own nice bed (unlike the p.o.s. bed in the apartment) with help from my family.  I haven't left the house, hell, I've hardly left the couch or bed.  It is slightly improving though.  I'm hoping for things to be different tomorrow.  And I'm really nervous and scared about the "what ifs"  Sometimes being a nurse is bad.  Knowledge is power, sure.  But sometimes knowing what you may be facing is worse than being oblivious to what may be ahead.

After the past nearly 2 weeks, it was good to be home.  It's been nice to spend time with my family (when I wasn't sedated from the medicines, of course).  They and I have had time to process everything that is going on in all aspects of my life and their life and future life.  I even had the first serious conversation with my dad about relationships.  Was nice to have a heart to heart with him.

Well, I can feel some medication kicking in, and it's 10:30 p.m.  So I guess I will stop for now.  Got a big weekend ahead with my niece's high school graduation on Sunday, and catching up with one of my Best Friends on Saturday evening.  It's nice to be home without a huge agenda.  Oh, and the pool is open and the water is nice and warm.

Gonna end with a quote... doesn't surprise you, does it?

"You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She's not perfect - you aren't either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break - her heart. So don't hurt her, don't change her, don't analyze and don't expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she's not there."
~Bob Marley
